Locations: The Death Of Bunny Munro

After his wife’s death, a sex-addicted door-to-door salesman and self-professed lothario Bunny Munro (Matt Smith) takes his young son on a chaotic sales tour around Brighton and beyond, where he is forced to confront what kind of man, and father, he really is.

Adapted from Nick Cave’s acclaimed novel, The Death of Bunny Munro is both a wild cautionary tale and a tender portrait of the relationship between father and son.

Episode 1

Butlin’s

The cold open of episode 1 of The Death of Bunny Munro features a flashback in which a young Bunny floats in a swimming pool at a Butlin’s holiday camp. The recently reopened and refurbished Saltdean Lido stands in for the location.

Lavelle Hotel – Room

Staying at the fictional Lavelle Hotel, Bunny Munro (Matt Smith) receives a call from Libby (Sarah Greene), alerting him that Brighton’s West Pier is ablaze and that further dangers lurk in the streets below.

The real hotel, the Langford, is a red-brick Victorian guesthouse on Third Avenue in Hove.

West Pier

In the opening title sequence, and at several moments throughout the series, we see the burning of Brighton’s West Pier. The real pier was devastated by fires in 2003, leaving the skeletal remains that still stand off the coast today.

As author Nick Cave recalls, “I was there – I stood and watched that pier burn down. So it was very much in my mind anyway. I think it’s a beautiful image.”

Bunny meets River, his waitress, over breakfast and gifts “the finest hand cream known to mankind” from his suitcase of beauty products before offering her a personal demonstration she finds hard to refuse.

The interiors for dining room scene set at the fictional Lavelle Hotel are shot in Eastbourne the Queens, situated east of Brighton, further along the south coast.

Lavelle Hotel – Lobby

The exterior of the Lavelle Hotel, as Bunny speeds away, is actually The Brighton Hotel, which overlooks Bedford Square and is opposite the Brighton Bandstand.

Brighton Bandstand

Bunny drives along the Kings Road in his 1987 Vauxhall Cavalier Cabrio, passing the burning West Pier and heading towards Hove Beach, where he raises a wry smile at the beachside revelry.

He drives past the beautifully restored Brighton Bandstand, a Victorian seafront landmark designed by Phillip Lockwood in 1884, once linked to the promenade by a bridge and now home to a small café beneath.

Bunny & Libby’s Flat

Bunny lives with Libby (Sarah Greene) and Bunny Junior (Rafael Mathé) in Embassy Court, an eleven-storey Modernist block on Brighton’s seafront at the corner of Western Street and Kings Road.

Designed by architect Wells Coates and completed in the mid-1930s, the Grade II*-listed building remains one of Britain’s most striking pre-war landmarks, famed for its elegant proportions and sweeping sea views.

Cemetery

In the first episode, the interior and exterior funeral and cemetery scenes were shot in Hailsham.

Episode 2

Eternity Enterprises

Bunny and his son visit Geoffrey at Eternity Enterprises, the heart of their wholesale cosmetics business as they prepare for the annual expo at the Brighton Centre, or to put it another way, to “shake the money tree and get ready for the big one,” as Bunny Junior puts it.

Mini golf

Marine Parade

Marine Parade is an integral part of Worthing’s seaside character and atmosphere. Traditionally the promenade has attracted visitors and residents alike.

Bunny Junior seeks refuge in a local pharmacy, where he buys some eye cream. The concerned chemist gently asks where his parents are.
